Troy Polamalu Has A Lot Of Hair. Expensive Hair.

Last week Steerlers’ saftey Troy Polamalu had his hair insured by Head & Shoulders. The policy is worth $1 million dollars and is through Lloyd’s of London. Polamalu has appeared in a couple of Head & Shoulders commercials endorsing their shampoo products.

If this play from 2006 were to happen today, Polamalu may or may not be collecting on the policy, as very few details were released.

Surely Polamalu isn’t the only player who should be protecting his assets. So who else in the NFL should be concerned about possible future investments? Here’s a list of a few players who should be contacting Lloyd’s of London to see if they can get a very unique insurance policy as well.

Chris Johnson- his grill

Last year, Johnson became only the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. He also set an NFL record for most yards from scrimmage in a single season with 2,509. The teeth had to have played some sort of role. Johnson reportedly missed one of three team buses once last year because he had forgotten his gold teeth. Despite his elusiveness and a 4.24 40 time at the rookie combine, it seems clear that ‘it’s gotta be the teeth.’ Johnson surely wouldn’t have eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark looking like this.

Kyle Orton-the neckbeard

Why should Kyle Orton get an insurance policy for his neckbeard? It’s who he is. Go back to the last time you and your friends were talking about Mr. Orton (there’s a good chance that never happened). His 9,000+ yards passing at Purdue or his 6-0 start with the Broncos last year most likely never came up in conversation. What was said probably went something like ‘Oh yeah, Orton, the guy with the disgustingly beautiful facial hair.’

Jay Cutler-the ball

Fortunately for Bears’ fans, that YouTube clip above only shows about half of Cutler’s interceptions from last season. Unfortunately for Bears’ fans, that YouTube clip above only shows about half of Cutler’s interceptions from last season.

Near the top of Lloyd’s website are big, bold, orange words: “Experts in risk.” Lloyd’s would be like a match made in heaven for Cutler, who led the NFL with 26 completed passes to opponents in ’09. What’s more, Cutler’s interception totals have increased every year since entering the league in 2006. ( He threw 5 in ’06, 14 in ’07, 18 in ’08, 26 last year. In fairness, so too have his TD numbers.) With mad scientist Mike Martz now calling offensive plays in Chicago, fans of Da’ Bears are hoping to see an end to the interception trend. Or they may be wishing Neckbeard never left town.

“Something Extra”

I’m not sure what’s funnier here: the fact referee Tony Corrente actually said “with something extra at the end of the play,” Corrente’s awkward hand gesture, or Mike Tomlin’s facial expression.

Welcome to 100 Yards of BS

Hopefully this won’t be too painful…

I’m Ben Schuff and I’m a junior at Iowa. I’m also a journalism major with an area of concentration in sports studies. Yes, that means I’m hoping to become a sports journalist someday. If I’m lucky, I might even get to cover the third, fourth, or fifth press conference at which Brett Favre retires.

I’m doing this blog for a sports journalism class, although I think it will become something I enjoy. The only sports blog that I read on a regular basis is Kissing Suzy Kolber, which probably explains why I chose the NFL as the topic for my blog.

That’s not to say I don’t genuinely enjoy the NFL; I do. I’m a huge Packers fan and it seems I’m one of the few Cheeseheads who still appreciates what Number Four did for Green Bay. I still cheer for Favre, even in purple, and in some twisted way I enjoyed seeing him beat the Packers last year.

And, yes, I do play fantasy football. My cousin got me compeletly hooked on it when I was in high school, so you can expect some posts on that subject every once in a while.

Finally, I aplogize for name of this blog. I spent over two hours tossing around different ideas before I landed on 100 Yards of BS. Not exactly what I had in mind, but hopefully it’ll work out. I struggled coming up with a name almost as much as Antonio Cromartie did naming his eight children in this clip from a recent episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks.
